A constant force spring is a special type of extension spring. It is formed by winding flat metal wire into coils with nearly constant preset stress. When the flat metal wire is stretched (twisted), its internal stress resists the load in exactly the same way as a conventional extension spring, but with a spring constant close to zero.
When the outer end of the spring is attached to another spool, a constant torque is achieved regardless of whether the initial winding direction is the same or opposite. The rated load is attained once the spring is bent to 1.25 times its original diameter. After that, it maintains a relatively constant force no matter how far it is extended. The load is generally determined by the material thickness, width and wire diameter.

Constant Force Spring Installation Guide
The installation of a constant force spring usually begins with tightly wrapping it around a roller, then attaching the free end to a load (e.g., a balancing weight), or vice versa.
The roller diameter should be 10% to 20% larger than the inner diameter of the spring.
When the spring is at its extended length, ensure that at least 1.5 coils remain wound around the roller.
If the spring strip is stretched excessively, it may become unstable. In such cases, guiding and limiting measures are required to prevent twisting during the stretching process.
The roller diameter must be larger than the inner diameter of the spring, and the spring strip must not be wound in the reverse direction.
